CHAR'S VW TRIKE

Char's Jewelry Trike, coming soon to your area!

Here is the story of my VW Trike in pictures. I (Char) built this Trike myself , with lots of help from the Lord & folks He blessed me with. This is my first Trike I ever built & the only one at this point!

  • THE DONORS

1971 VW Super Beetle "My Ugly"

1971 VW Super Beetle "My Ugly"

I started with this 1971 VW Super Beetle that I owned for 12 years.

I pulled this VW out of a junkyard in Albuquerque, NM & put it back on the road.

Char on the 1980 Honda CB650 Custom

Out of a junkyard in Hazelton, PA, I purchased a 1980 Honda CB650 Custom Motorcycle to use for the front end of my Trike. This bike had only 12,000 original miles on it & ran great.

Friends said I should keep it intact instead of cutting it up. But the whole idea was... build a Trike!

  • DESTRUCTION PHASE

In the summer of 2000, I started to disassemble my VW, removed the body, and chopped the floor pan off to accommodate the welding of the Honda front end. Of course this went way into the year 2002 with the welding and other work I needed to complete. My friend and cousin, Kenny Darby was my main source of welding expertise & numerous other areas of help & inspiration.

Right here I must say "Thank you" to the Darby Family in Falls, Pennsylvania, USA, with special Hugs & "Thanks" to Ken Darby Sr. & Jr.

   Thanks guys, you're the Best!

body shell & front end

removed, leaving the

floor pan, rear

axle/transaxle, & engine.

Now the floor pan has

been removed & chopped

off in front off the VIN #,

leaving the axle/transaxle

& engine.

1971 VW rear end with floor pan removed

I do have quite a bit of

the early action up to this

point on video, including

the Sawz-all viciously

attacking the Honda &

severing the front end

from the rest of it.

Now that the Destruction phase was over, the Construction phase could begin.....

  • CONSTRUCTION PHASE

welded to the VW including

the repositioning of the

VW gear shift.

Honda Front end welded to VW rear end

This shows the positioning

of the Honda front end

to the VW rear end.

Anyway, to cut a long

story short, there were

many welding & designing sessions

involved to reach the next stage.

PENNSYLVANIA PROMOTIONAL TOUR

April 2005 - October 2005

*******

Surfing on the Internet, I came across the BTW website, Brothers of the Third Wheel. I emailed Bill Fidler, NE PA Chapter Director, through that site & asked him if there were "Sisters"? He said there sure are! Requested insurance info from a few of the Brothers, & through the course of things, Bill told me one of the Brothers in York builds, sells & inspects Trikes. York seems like a looong way from NEPA Land!

Tried to get my Trike inspected in one  of the local cities near by at a motorcycle shop, but it didn't work out. They didn't know what to do with it!

Bill also knew of a shop in Reading that was familiar with inspecting Trikes, so we made arrangements for Bill to bring his trailer to Falls from Reading & take my Trike to the shop in Reading.

10-18-02

The morning all this was supposed to happen, Bill called me to let me know he was on his way & I asked him if we could just go ahead & take my Trike down to Wayne the Trikeman in York. Bill said OK & that's where we ended up.

Wayne & Bill were such great folks I just had to join the Brothers of the Third Wheel!

Trike ready for inspection. Precious, always hopeful.....

VW/Honda Trike - Front, Rear, Right side, Left side views

On October 18th, I took my Trike down to York, PA for inspection. This is what it looked like that day, & these are the pictures I supplied with my MV 426 Form.

10-25-02    ANNOUNCEMENT!!!!

MY TRIKE IS ACTUALLY LEGAL FOR THE ROAD IN PA!!

I have a 40"X48"X1/4" sheet of Aluminum Diamond Plate that I will use as a flat bed piece over top of the gas tank & engine. It extends from behind my seat almost to the end of my exhaust pipes.

On either side of the flatbed, I will have some fittings welded that hold a removable roll bar. This bar will be for the convenience of tarping the Trike on the road at stops to provide protection from the rain and for a shade cover.

My critters, Murphy & Precious, will be riding on my Trike with me. There will be a cages fastened down right behind my seat on the flat bed for them. So you now see why I need to have rain & shade cover for my Trike.

10-29-02 Worked on building the frame for the Flatbed today. Got the front portion of the frame welded by Howard, Darby Industries #1 Welder, & was able to bolt it to the existing fuel tank frame. From there I laid the Aluminum Diamond plate on the partial frame, some 2X4 wooden supports under the back end & measured for the rest of the frame. Now I have most of the frame pieces cut to size, drilled where necessary for bolts holes, & ready for more welding.

10-31-02

My Trike is finally finished & ready for a road trip!

Jewelry Trike, Precious, & Me in Falls, PA

My Trike is a work in progress, I will continue to work on it & do some body work etc. along the way.

The whole existing rear frame that you see above unbolts from the VW body frame. Everything comes off in one piece, the fenders, base frame & fuel tank frame.

The Aluminum Diamond plate is bolted to it's own separate frame above the fuel tank which is bolted to the existing frame . This way, all the framing is removable & easy to disassemble & reassemble for maintenance, painting, modifications, etc.

Here I am in Bisbee AZ, enjoying the winter sunshine!

Since then, I have been on many Bike Runs locally with my Trike & all the way down to NC!  I was blessed with being able to attend the Annual East Coast Trike-In hosted by the Brothers of the Third Wheel. This year it was held in Asheboro, NC over the Labor Day Weekend. It was my first Trike-In, & was definitely enjoyed by all. Precious was a great hit there also. Many were the tales of her riding on my Trike in the Parade, taking a bite at the "Weenie Bite" contest, getting the first place Trophy for the Farthest Triked (1,000 miles), taking first place in the Rat Trike Division of the Trike Show, and countless more. Lord willin', we will be returning to NC next Labor Day Weekend for the 2004 East Coast Trike-In.
